2024 STEM Project Scholarship 

Scholarship Award: $2,000

Submission Deadline: June 1, 2024

Eligibility: Graduating high school seniors pursuing a STEM degree

This scholarship is limited to students in the state of New Jersey

Most technology has obvious 1st order consequences. For example:

If people buy autonomous (self-driving) electric vehicles, our society will decrease its dependence on oil.

Less obvious, are 2nd order consequences - or ripple effects - of technology changes. Said another way - how does a particular piece of technology fit into larger societal systems? An example:

If people buy more autonomous (self-driving) electric vehicles, real-estate prices near major cities may drop since the “burden of commuting to work” decreases substantially.

Project

Select a technology, of your choice, and discuss the 1st and 2nd order effects within our society.

Please submit a recorded presentation that covers:

  1. Your selected technology

  2. Why this technology is important

  3. Key 1st order consequences

  4. Key 2nd order consequences

  5. Your ideas to remediate any unintended technology consequences

Submission format:

  • 10 min presentation length limit (but shorter is okay!)

  • Recorded video (with slides or another presentation format) submitted via email to projectscholarship@intellectionnj.com

    • Link to video may be submitted via private Youtube video, GDrive link, etc.
